The River of Pride LGBTQQIP2SAA+ Pride Month

Gay pride or LGBTQQIP2SAA+ pride is the positive stance against discrimination and violence toward lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBTQQIP2SAA+) people to promote their self-affirmation, dignity, equality rights, increase their visibility as a social group, build community, and celebrate sexual diversity and gender variance. Pride, as opposed to shame and social stigma, is the predominant outlook that bolsters most LGBTQQIP2SAA+ rights movements throughout the world. Pride has lent its name to LGBTQQIP2SAA+-themed organizations, institutes, foundations, book titles, periodicals and even a cable TV station and the Pride Library. Ranging from solemn to carnivalesque, pride events are typically held during LGBTQQIP2SAA+ Pride Month or some other period that commemorates a turning point in a country’s LGBTQQIP2SAA+ history, for example Moscow Pride in May for the anniversary of Russia’s 1993 decriminalization of homosexuality. Some pride events include LGBTQQIP2SAA+ pride parades and marches, rallies, commemorations, community days, dance parties, and large festivals, such as Sydney Mardi Gras, which spans several weeks. In the US Pride is the month of June.

Pansexual Visibility Day

The River of Pride Pansexual Visibility Day

Pan Visibility Day is on May 24th and is a day to celebrate and recognize those who identify as pansexual.

Here are a few helpful bits of info.

Pan means ‘all’ and comes from the Geek’s. Pansexual people aren’t attracted to all other people, but they are attracted to people of all genders. This is different from being attracted to everyone; in the same way that a heterosexual woman will not be attracted to all men and a lesbian woman will not be attracted to all women, pansexual people will experience attraction to specific people and not others.

Pansexuality is different from bisexuality but the two aren’t mutually exclusive. Being bisexual means being attracted to more than one gender, while being pansexual means being attracted to people regardless of gender. Pansexuality and bisexuality are not in conflict. In fact, some bisexual people also identify as pansexual, and vice versa. Pansexuality is included under the bisexual umbrella, which covers anyone who experiences sexual or romantic attraction to more than one gender.

Harvey Milk Day is organized by the Harvey Milk Foundation and celebrated each year held May 22 in memory of Harvey Milk, a gay rights activist assassinated in 1978.

The Month of Pride Is Around the Corner

The River of Pride Happy New Year

We’re days away from this year’s pride month of June. The calendar is full and the days to our first parade/march of the season is nearing.

Here’s a list of our scheduled events:

Boston Pride June 8th

This is our first event of the season with 900 feet of The River of Pride Flag and the highly anticipated debut of The Unity Pride Flag. The new flag is made up of 274 flags that is 200 feet long. We’re looking forward to seeing it unfurled for the first time!

Pride Portland! June 15th

We’re happy to say this will be The River of Pride Flag’s 12th time in the Portland ME pride parade. We’re honored to have been requested and looking forward to seeing familiar marchers carrying the flag again this year!

New York City Pride June 30th

June marks the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots and the first time WorldPride is being hosted in the United States.

NYC Pride invites both flags to take part in the march. 1/4 mile of The River of Pride Flag will be participating along with The Unity Pride Flag.

The River of Pride International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia

International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHO or IDAHOT) are widely recognized as an essential feature in the international LGBT rights calendar. In the 9th edition, in 2013, commemorations took place in almost 120 countries, in all world regions. The day aims to coordinate international events that raise awareness of LGBT rights violations and stimulate interest in LGBT rights work worldwide. IDAHO’s date was chosen to commemorate the decision to remove homosexuality from the International Classification of Diseases of the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1990. The original founders of the International Day Against Homophobia (or “IDAHO”), established the IDAHO Committee to co-ordinate grass-roots actions in different countries, to promote the day and to lobby for official recognition of May 17.

Day of Silence

The River of Pride Day of Silence

The Day of Silence is the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network’s (GLSEN) annual day of action to protest the bullying and harassment of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) students and their supporters. Students take a day-long vow of silence to symbolically represent the silencing of LGBT students and their supporters.

International Transgender Day of Visibility

The River of Pride International Transgender Day of Visibility

International Transgender Day of Visibility is an annual holiday occurring on March 31 dedicated to celebrating transgender people and raising awareness of discrimination faced by transgender people worldwide. The holiday was founded by Michigan-based transgender activist Rachel Crandall in 2009 as a reaction to the lack of LGBT holidays celebrating transgender people, citing the frustration that the only well-known transgender-centered holiday was the Transgender Day of Remembrance which mourned the loss of transgender people to hate crimes, but did not acknowledge and celebrate living members of the transgender community.
